[I hope Ed has good reflexes, because the door's suddenly swinging open with the force of a stampeding bull, knocking against the wall with a loud clang moments before Hange's head is peeking out from the rover.]
Hey! [And she's already stepping back, allowing him to step inside if he so pleases. She takes a moment to study him and—wow, the file did say he was short, but...]
[ Since she's read his file she might know about certain tiny things like how he had tried to revive his mom and lost his brother's body + two limbs in the process ...... good times.
Since the universe hates Ed, he gets smacked in the face by the door, falling backward into the snow. ]
Hey, watch it! [ Rubbing his face, where the brunt of the impact is. ] Yeah, I was pretty exhausted walking that 10 meters.
[She sure does, but while Hange's reckless in nearly every sense that one would expect, she isn't the type to frivolously cast aside human lives like they're nothing more than a statistic. Ed himself would have to be the one to voluntarily bring it up before she even considers touching it.
Fortunately, her subject of interest allows her to focus her attention elsewhere for the time being, smiling wide at his retort.]
Come on in and rest those weary legs of yours, then. [She's already turning and slipping back inside the rover, calling out loudly so Ed can still hear.] Unless you aren't keen on cooping yourself from one rover to the next.
Nah, it's fine. [ SINCE SHE'S ALREADY SLIPPING BACK IN ANYWAY. It was more being cooped up and seeing the same faces that was getting tiring for him. Ed follows Hange into the rover, his eyes panning around the new surroundings. Then, he turns back to Hange. ]
[Hopefully Ed closes the door on his way inside, because Hange's already making her way to one of the tables housing fruit of all shapes and sizes. She's reaching for an apple, grabbing the nearby knife just as Ed gets to the point of the matter.
And just like that her expression shifts, smile dissolving and brows drawing together in contemplation.]
Do you have anything referred to as 'titans' back in your world?
[ He does notice the shift in demeanor. It's obvious that whatever the topic at hand is, it's not something frivolous to her. Maybe he needs to be a bit more serious too. ]
Nope, I've never heard of them. [ Though, judging from the outfit he has seen Hange walking around in from time to time -- ] Are they anything like ... giants?
[ Since she might be from the same world as Mikasa, and giants are apparently a thing there. ]
[Ah, a newcomer. There's a familiar jolt that trails up her spine at the opportunity, but she tries to keep her description short for the moment given that she has much time as Ed will allow her.]
'Giant' is one way to describe them. [Hange offers.] They vary greatly in height, ranging between 3 meters all the way to 60.
[She chews on her lip a bit.]
There's plenty I can share about them with you, but I've found some points between titans and homunculi (did she get the term right??) worth comparing. While all titans I've witnessed possess the ability to regenerate, there are a few I've seen with specialized traits, one of which includes encasing their bodies in crystal or a sort of natural armor.
[That should immediately clue Ed on why Greed is such fascinating subject for her.]
[ Sixty meters ... Ed blinks, trying to imagine the scale of that. ]
And that must be why Greed piqued your interest?
[ Because those regenerating and hardening abilities do sound awfully familiar. ]
Yeah, he definitely has similar abilities. Greed's Ultimate Shield stems from his ability to rearrange the carbon atoms of his skin. Meaning, he can shift its composition to be as hard as diamond or as brittle as graphite.
Sort of, [Hange starts before elaborating further.] So far there's no known man made object capable of penetrating the crystalized armor produced by these specific titans, but it doesn't appear that they're capable of adjusting the strength or potency of said shields.
[The fact that Greed's capable of controlling that factor is amazing in and of itself, and maybe learning more about the nature of his skills will provide her with another angle on how to properly analyze the titans.]
I've glanced over his file but I only know as much about homonculi as it provides. [She continues on since Ed technically asked her what she knew anyway.] Greed told me himself that this Ultimate Shield is a specialized ability that only he possesses, but what are the sort of traits that all homunculi share?
If it's anything like diamond, that might be why. [ he can't think of anything capable of breaking a diamond -- well, besides another diamond. ]
The main thing shared by all homunculi is their regenerative ability. While they aren't actually immortal, they can probably die a good dozen of times or more before they're wiped out. [ HE'S NOT SURE HOW DEEP TO GO WITH THIS. Can he trust Hange with knowledge on the Philosopher's Stone ... Not right now. ]
Also, they don't age. The previous Greed was over 200 years old, apparently. [ Please don't ask him how old this Greed is. He wouldn't know whether to say 200, 15 or several months. ]
[To what? The idea that the armor the titans possess could possibly be constructed from a substance similar to diamond? Or how they can technically 'die' several times over before energy and stamina finally catch up to them?
Technically, it's all of that.]
From what we've studied, it doesn't appear that titans can die several times over. [And good thing too.] They have a very particular weak point, and so far it seems as if they all remain dead after striking said point.
[As for age, she isn't sure if it's a universal rule with all titans. While they've roamed outside the walls for several decades, the shifters themselves are capable of aging... Fascinating.]
Is it possible for all homunculi to jump from one host to the other?
A weak point? [ That definitely sets them apart from homunculi. From what he's heard, a homunculous can regenerate after being completely and utterly destroyed. ]
You know about that ...? [ That Greed is using Ling's body. Ed's a little surprised. It looks like Greed revealed quite a bit. ] No, Greed's a special case. I'm pretty sure most of them were born in their own bodies.
[ Now how does he explain this without revealing too much about the Philosopher's Stone... Okay, he'll tell her about it, but he won't tell her how to make one. ]
He's a human-based homunculous -- the Philosopher's Stone containing him was introduced into the body of my friend Ling, and Ling allowed him to take over. I'm pretty sure he can't jump to another host though.
[On the other side of the spectrum, a titan's 'weak point' is universal, and with three shifters currently in the CDC's possession, she can't take any chances with spreading that particular information around just yet. However, if Ed can be trusted...]
I'll leave that for another time.
[As for the host jumping:]
It was mentioned on his file. [By that point she's already pulling up file for Ed to scan over himself once he has a moment.] It stated that Greed was able to control another body, so I made my assumptions based on that.
[Otherwise, she listens to his explanation of why Greed is technically the exception to the rule. Unfortunately, it seems to bring up more questions than it does answers.]
What is the context of the Philosopher's Stone back in your world?

no, no. that's not inconvenient at all.

I guess we can just figure out who wants to make the long and agonizing trek to the other.

i can go. i was planning to take a walk, anyway. i've been cooped up in my rover all morning.
[ plotting a mutiny, apparently. it's a long story. ]

i'll, uh, see you in a bit, hange.
